Bob Dylan :: After The Crash (1967-1970)

Following the amphetamine-paced frenzy of his 1966 European tour, Bob Dylan retreated to his home in Woodstock, NY. It was there that, on July 29th, the artist crashed his Triumph 500 motorcycle. While the details of the crash, and subsequent injuries, remain somewhat of a mystery, Dylan, reflecting on the pivotal event, later stated in an interview that "When I had that motorcycle accident...I woke up and caught my senses, and realized that I was just workin’ for all these leeches. And I really . . .

Sevens :: David Bromberg: Sharon

(Sevens, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

Some songs feel like a carnival. Some songs feel like a saloon. And some songs manage to convey both (yeah, I'm lookin' at you Tom Waits). Yes, David Bromberg's swaying "Sharon" is one such song. A loose and funky narrative, the tune tells the tale of, what else, a mysterious lady, a . . .

The Perfect Hit of Fake Paul McCartney

The right song at the right time. Really, is there anything sweeter? Halloween, late-night, driving from the 101 Cafe down Franklin to Los Feliz, a friend, playing DJ in the front seat, followed up Elvis Costello's "Accidents Will Happen" with Gerry Rafferty's "Right Down The Line." I tell you, it was the perfect hit of fake Paul McCartney.

Sure, a lot of artists have worked the Paul angle (Badfinger, Emmit Rhodes), but Rafferty's "Right Down The Line"

Sevens (Politiko) :: A Change Is Gonna Come

(This concludes the Politiko series of Sevens: a feature on Aquarium Drunkard that pays tribute to the art of the individual song. Go vote.)

Sam Cooke was astounded by Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." Seriously. "Geez, a white boy writing a song like that," Cooke commented. Though it wasn't so much the lyrics that affected Cooke - he liked them enough to . . .

The Moondoggies :: Don’t Be a Stranger

In a perfect world we want bands to be big, boisterous, and musically varied - able to pull off a quiet riot or a harmonize on top of thunderous guitars. In truth, we want music that throws us for a loop but never throws us away. All so we'll return the favor.

Enter The Moondoggies and their debut record, Don't Be a Stranger . . .

The Henry Clay People :: For Cheap Or For Free

If pissing into the wind had no consequences, it would be called The Henry Clay People. They're the embodiment of untethered, I-don't-really-give-damn exuberance, but their music isn't an act of futility or recklessness. It's intentionally untamed, wild with a purpose.

Their second full-length record For Cheap or For Free (Autumn Tone, Nov. 4) jumps in an out of the . . .

The Ry Cooder Anthology :: 1970 – 2008

Long before I knew the long-running history of the artist (and his many varied talents and interests) it was Wim Wenders meditative film Paris, TX that first turned me on to the playing of Ry Cooder. Cooder's use of steel and slide on the film's score is both transcendental and haunting...not unlike the film's protagonist, Travis Henderson, portrayed by an . . .

Blair :: The AD Interview

AD caught up with Blair last week from her home in New Orleans where the singer-songwriter is finishing up her debut LP, Die Young. Think: Feist meets Neil Young at a bar owned by Dolly Parton where the house band is Radiohead. Among other things, we discussed the five-year process of recording Die Young, and how New Orleans has - or rather, hasn't - made her the musician she is.

Sevens (Politiko) :: Pete Seeger, Turn! Turn! Turn!

(Sevens, a feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song. From now through the November 4th election, Sevens will focus on political songs)

Protest songs and politically framed ballads are almost immediately associated with Vietnam-era musicians. Or maybe it's that those musicians are almost immediately branded as subverters of a cultural paradigm during such a seachange in the American substance. Nonetheless, their words and countercultural display of freedom marked a shift in artistic expression. They not only popularized free will . . .
