Sevens :: Steely Dan: Reelin’ in the Years

(Sevens, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

Let me begin by saying that when the genre of yacht rock is finally sunk forever by the churning ocean of history and good taste, I’ll be one of the last to call SOS. There’s always been something grating about the entire style — two guys; usually mustachioed; playing lite, jazzy, half-rock for the lunchbreak set. And, really, “Reelin’ in the Years” is . . .

The Replacements :: Shit, Shower & Shave (1989)

A long traded compilation, Shit, Shower & Shave, recorded in 1989, is the sound of the band while on tour with Tom Petty who later, infamously, ripped off Westerberg's "rebel without a clue" line from the Mats "I'll Be You." Tracks 1-12 Bristol Connecticut August 31 1989 - Tracks 13-17 Milwaukee Wisconsin, June 1989 (originally released on Sire's Inconcerated promo CD) - Tracks 18-23 Mansfield Massachusetts August 28, 1989

The Gaturs :: Wasted (1970)

High five. While The Gaturs name should be familiar to those who have picked up various '70s NOLA funk & soul compilations (i.e., Soul Jazz Records), the Wasted LP itself has proved much more elusive.   After first digging the above LP while playing in the background at a friend's house, during Jazz Fest in New Orleans, I've since been seeking out a physical copy of the disc high and low . . .

Off The Record :: Bowerbirds (The Triangle, NC)

Off The Record is a recurring feature here on the Drunkard that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Today's installment of Off The Record finds us in . . .

Julie Ocean :: The AD Interview

Earlier this month AD caught up with Julie Ocean's Terry Banks to discuss (among other things) the band's new LP, Long Gone And Nearly There, the Velocity Girl days, The Undertones, the local scene in Washington D.C., and an open-ended invitation to Teenage Fanclub.

Aquarium Drunkard: So tell me about where the band's name comes from.

Scratch The Surface :: Bob Dylan: Blood On The Tracks

Album artwork: Does it indeed affect our listening experience, and if so, how? Scratch the Surface is a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard that that takes a look at some dubious/in(famous) cover art choices. Not surprisingly, we kick off the series with one of our favorite LPs, Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks.

I’ve always been a fan of rock art, from stickers and show posters to t-shirt designs, but nothing . . .

In The Pocket With Eddie Bo :: NOLA Funk & Soul

In the span of 28 tracks, Crescent city funk and soul man, Eddie Bo, gets the comprehensive overview treatment on the In The Pocket compilation. I've posted Bo's track "Funky Yeah" in the past, but couldn't resist doing so again for those of you who either missed it the first time, or lost it on hard drives jammed with MP3s.

Robert Pollard Is Off To Business

With an average release schedule of 3-4 titles per year even the most ardent fans of the Pollard faithful can turn skeptic. And rightly so. This, the 1st release from the newly christened Guided by Voices label, is both refreshing and the most rewarding release Pollard has issued since 2006's From A Compound Eye, which was ironically, (as Pollard's first . . .

Times New Viking/Abe Vigoda :: @ The Smell

Times New Viking/Abe Vigoda :: @ The Smell - June 16, 2008 - DTLA

Sometimes you have to see a band live for them to truly make sense. The blown cones and tinny treble of Times New Viking’s Matador debut, Rip it Off, brings new meaning to the term “lo-fi.” The album is so buzzy, so thin, as to be nearly unlistenable . . .

The Baseball Project: Frozen Ropes & Dying Quails

It’s a well-known fact that there has never been a bad song recorded about baseball. Not one. I’m even willing to include John Fogerty’s synth-clapping “Centerfield” (ed. brave) and every last one of those jazz songs about Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle that came out when my dad was a kid. Whatever the case, something about baseball has historically lent the sport the uncanny ability to wink at itself. Go back and listen to those old songs, if you can . . .
