Ye olde Aquarium Drunkard turned two today. Despite what the archives state (I merged the May 2005 data with the June posts a year and a half ago) this is the 1,463 post since May of 2005.
It's only fitting that Wilco have a new album coming out next week, as become a member or log in.
I have been enthusiastically riding the Richard Swift train backwards since devouring his 2007 LP, Dressed Up For The Letdown, earlier this year, and catching his live act twice in the past few months. In a word, the guy is exceptional.
The past two weeks have found me taking in his 2005 double-album package

The live document The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads came on (randomly) this weekend while my laptop was connected to the stereo. CNN was on the television, on mute, and David Byrne's lyrics to "Life During Wartime" washed over the screen as footage of the Iraq war played out, silently, on CNN.
The syncronicty was both poetic and a grotesque reminder of where . . .

Michael Zapruder's Rain Of Frogs is new to me, but you very well may have read about his LP, New Ways of Letting Go, last Summer upon it's release via the SF based Howell's Transmitter label.
Not sure how I missed this . . .

The original Dinosaur Jr. reformed and made a new record. You probably know this already.
The Whatever's Cool With Me EP was the first Dinosaur recording I'd ever heard . . .

Drunkard pal Ross Flournoy, from The Broken West, stopped by and guest DJ'd with me this past Wednesday at Little Radio. The band is in the middle of a three week break here in Los Angeles before heading back out on the road -- possibly coming to a town near you. Tune in to the show next Wednesday as Ross comes back in to guest DJ.

This album is really great in an understated way. I know nothing about it other than it is a male/female French duo singing acoustic pop songs in English. If you are privy to the details of the partnership, hit me up in the comments. RIYL: early Belle & Sebastian.

Not surprisingly (because the tune is the absolute shit) a bunch of folks enquired as to the name/origins of the Link Wray song that opened up yesterday's show on Little Radio (for those who missed it, it will be posted in podcast form later this week.)
The track is "La De Da" off Link Wray's self-titled 1971 album, which I . . .

If you're at all into classic, blues based, rock & roll from the early '70s, the wah pedal and general vibe of this song will absolutely melt your face. Clapton's guitar, all wah'd out, sets the mood immediately.
While I can live without the majority of Clapton's work from the mid-seventies onward, Derek & The Dominos sole album Layla is beyond essential. It is the crown achievement of the man's career. This become a member or log in.
Ross from The Broken West guest DJ'd today on the A.D. Little Radio show. I was loving the fact he played this Bettye LaVette's cover of Lucinda Williams "Joy" off LaVette's covers LP become a member or log in.
I'm still loving Robyn Hitchcock's 2006 album with the Venus 3, Ole Tarantula, but seeing him play semi-acoustic this Spring called for a re-visitation of his stark, southern gothic tinged 2004 LP become a member or log in.
Loretta Lynn's (excellent) collaboration with Jack White, Van Lear Rose, produced, quite possibly, one of my favorite spoken word story-songs ever. Entitled "Little Red Shoes," what some may have viewed as a throwaway track, I found to be the cornerstone of the album. Amidst the more rocked up atmosphere of the affair was this oasis of pure become a member or log in.
Being that An Aquarium Drunkard's two year anniversary is right around the corner, I am taking the opportunity to revisit some some artists in past posts whose music is rarely, if ever, reported on. I can't think of a more perfect example than Joseph Plunkett & The Weight.
This will mark the third time - in 24 months - that I have posted these five tracks hoping to turn on new fans, and perhaps get an update on what Plunkett has up his musical sleeve these days. Last we heard, the . . .
