The Lagniappe Sessions :: Chico Bernardes

The past 18 months have found our ears trained on Brazil's burgeoning contemporary music scene. To name a handful, Ana Frango Elétrico, Tim Bernardes, Sessa, Kiko Dinucci, Catavento, and O Terno's records have all soundtracked our Los Angeles HQ.

São Paulo singer-songwriter Chico Bernardes is the latest to join this loose cadre, whose debut lp remains ripe and in steady rotation. For his Lagniappe Session the 20-year-old multi-instrumentalist reflects on early inspiration (Grizzly Bear), and local sonic compatriots (Sophia Chablau and Téo Serson . . .

Karl Blau :: Live From the Void

Running just over 26-minutes in length, Karl Blau's Live From the Void arrives exactly as advertised: a live show presented within complete isolation, "performed for an audience of zero, in an abandoned amphitheater somewhere on the East Coast.” It's a naturalistic offering: chirping birds, rustling leaves, and flowing waters provide the record’s only sounds other than those imparted by Blau himself . . .

Nick Mitchell Maiato :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

Some of the songs of Nick Mitchell Maiato's Pino Carrasco were bound for One Eleven Heavy's third album. But when the pandemic wrecked plans, he pivoted, shaping the album on his own while in quarantine in Spain. The result is an idiosyncratic and jammy gem. He joined us to speak about its weird genesis . . .

Transmissions :: Sam Prekop

Incoming transmission from...Sam Prekop. For more than 25 years, he's released music with the Sea and Cake and on his own. His last few solo albums have found him focusing less on pop song craft and more on analog synthesizers and ambient textures. His latest for Thrill Jockey records is called Comma and on it he blends serene soundscapes with twitching electronic rhythms. Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury reached him in Chicago to talk about hunkering down, synths, and how he and his Sea and Cake bandmates continue their remarkable work together . . .

Tobin Sprout :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

Tobin Sprout was the other songwriter in early-1990s Guided by Voices.

But, in addition to his historic stint with one of lo-fi’s most exuberant bands, Sprout has done a lot of other stuff. He’s a well-regarded photo realist painter, an author and illustrator of several books and, every few years, a solo artist. In 2020, he released his eighth solo album, Empty Horses, a gorgeous but somewhat unexpected detour into Americana sounds and Civil War imagery. We talked about his new focus on country sounds, his art and his books and the band that started . . .

Andrew Sandoval :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

In 1965, White Whale Records scored a massive hit with its very first release, the Turtles’ “It Ain’t Me Babe.” For the next five years, the label released over 150 singles and 24 albums. The recently released The Land of Sensations & Delights: The Psych Pop Sounds of White Whale Records, 1965–1970 rounds up stand-outs from the imprint's brief but prolific run. It's the latest project from Grammy-nominated deejay, author, and producer Andrew Sandoval, who joined us to discuss White Whale, record collecting, his work with the Monkees, and the future of boutique archival material . . .

Unearthed, Vol. 12 :: Skating In Central Park

With live music still iffy this year, let's travel back to some long-ago summers in New York City's Central Park. For the 12th edition of the Unearthed bootleg mix series, we're training our ears on Wollman Skating Rink, which hosted some truly stellar al fresco concerts back in the day. These performances span from the late 1960s to the early 1980s and encompass a wide range of freaky fresh air jams: dark funk jazz, ecstatic post-punk, prog epics, Texas boogie — it's all here . . .

Gunn-Truscinski Duo :: For Eddie Hazel

John Truscinski and Steve Gunn's wistfully fried “For Eddie Hazel” closes the duo's new album Soundkeeper, buzzing with amp noise as gorgeous riffs and steady cymbals fade into a shimmering reflection. As the guitarist explains, it was their attempt to pay tribute to one of history’s most ground-shaking soloists. “Because we’ve listened and talked about him so much, we figured it was time to dedicate something in his honor . . .
